What this page covers
This page is about getting into the IRD portal and finding your way around it. Registering for a TIN is a separate job, and our TIN registration guide covers it. Filling in the return itself is covered in our guide to filing your income tax return.
RAMIS login: the short version
RAMIS is the Inland Revenue Department’s online tax system, and it sits at https://eservices.ird.gov.lk. The login page is titled “Login – RAMIS”. RAMIS stands for the Revenue Administration Management Information System, the name the Inland Revenue Act uses for the department’s electronic tax system.
Bookmark the real address: eservices.ird.gov.lk. Only use that domain. IRD’s own site is at ird.gov.lk, and its “Access to e-Services” page links through to the same portal. If a link, email or ad sends you anywhere else asking for your TIN and PIN, do not enter them there.
Step by step: logging in
- Go to eservices.ird.gov.lk. The right-hand panel is headed “Logging in for/to” and offers five options: Personal Tax Matters, Authorisation of Staff/Tax Agent, Company/Business’s Tax Matter, Client’s Tax Matter, and Stamp Duty – Non Compounding.
- If you are filing your own return, select Personal Tax Matters, then click the Login button.
- The next screen is headed “I am logging in for my personal tax matters”. The first field is “My tax reference number”. The small box beside it is already set to TIN and cannot be changed on this screen, so you only need to type your TIN in the box next to it.
- Enter your PIN in the “My IRD PIN” field below it.
- Type the captcha characters into the box labelled “Enter the text shown left”. There is a Refresh link if you cannot read them.
- Click Login.
There is a second route that IRD’s own e-filing guide sets out: start at ird.gov.lk, open e-Services, choose Access to e-Services, select Individual Taxpayer and click Proceed to Login. Both routes end at the same login form.
Browser compatibility
The login form and the PIN request form both carry this notice: “The e-service facility is mainly compatible with Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers. Kindly use the latest version of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browser.” If the page looks broken, freezes on submit, or the captcha will not load, switch to an up-to-date Chrome or Edge before trying anything else.
First time logging in: getting your IRD PIN
The IRD PIN is separate from your TIN. IRD describes it as “an unique identification number issued to both individual and non-individual (e.g. Companies, Partnership etc.) to access IRD eService at IRD Tax Portal”. You request it from the portal itself, without logging in first.
From the eservices.ird.gov.lk landing page, under “Other eServices”, click Request for IRD PIN. IRD says the form takes about five minutes. On it:
- Enter your Reference No. The reference type offered on this form is TIN.
- Fill in the name of the taxpayer in English, and in Tamil or Sinhala if those apply, plus a contact number.
- Choose an Acquisition mode: Email or Postal.
- If you choose Email, enter the email address. IRD says the PIN “will be e-mailed to your address registered with and maintained by IRD” and arrives “within few minutes”, but adds that if the address you enter does not match the one IRD holds, “you will not be qualified to proceed this mode”.
- If you choose Postal and have not updated your registered email in your RAMIS profile, IRD says the PIN “can be obtained on the following working day itself” by emailing the Primary Registration Unit at pr@ird.gov.lk with your TIN and the PIN request Acknowledgement Number, attaching your NIC or valid passport copy. Partnerships, companies and other entities attach their own registration documents and the NIC of the person requesting.
- To update your registered email address first, IRD directs you to the Customer Information Update Unit at ci@ird.gov.lk, with your TIN and the same supporting documents.
- Enter the captcha and click Submit.
One limit to know about: IRD states the system “will not process subsequent online requests for IRD PIN if your last accepted or processed online request was made within the last 7 working days”. If you already requested a PIN this week, a second request will not be processed until that window passes.
Forgot your IRD PIN, or locked out
The login form carries a “Forgot My IRD PIN?” link, just below the browser compatibility notice. It opens a page headed “Forgot My IRD PIN” with one field, “My tax reference number”, already set to TIN, plus a captcha, a Next button and a Cancel button.
IRD’s own e-filing guide gives the other route in plain terms: “If you have forgotten your PIN or your account has been locked, please request a new PIN.” So if the Forgot route does not get you back in, or your account is locked, use Request for IRD PIN on the landing page and keep the 7-working-day limit above in mind.
Locked out or getting an error
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Page will not load, looks broken, or the captcha image is blank | Switch to the latest Chrome or Microsoft Edge. IRD states the portal is “mainly compatible” with those two browsers. |
| Captcha text is unreadable | Click the Refresh link beside the captcha box for a new image. |
| You cannot find the “Forgot My IRD PIN?” link | It is on the login form, not on the eservices.ird.gov.lk landing page. Choose a login category and click Login first. |
| Forgotten PIN, or the account is locked | Use “Forgot My IRD PIN?” on the login form, or request a new PIN, which is what IRD’s guide tells you to do in both cases. |
| “Request for IRD PIN” is not processed | You may have made an accepted request in the last 7 working days. IRD does not process repeat requests inside that window. |
| PIN email never arrives | IRD only emails the PIN to the address already registered against your TIN. Contact the Customer Information Update Unit at ci@ird.gov.lk to correct your registered email. |
| Not sure you have a TIN at all | See our TIN registration guide. |
| Everything above fails | Contact IRD. The Head Office general number is 011 – 213 5135 and the Call Centre number is 1944. |
What you can do once you are logged in
IRD’s “Access to e-Services” page states that “You, or people you authorize, can log in and use different e-Services for registering, filing your returns, checking your tax balance and transaction history, paying taxes, requesting a refund, lodging an appeal or an objection, or requesting for a clearance certificate.” The same page confirms you need both a TIN and a PIN to use e-Services.
To reach your return, IRD’s guides tell you to use the top menu: select Return / Schedule Management, then Individual Income Tax (IIT). If Individual Income Tax is not listed there, IRD says that means you are not yet registered for that tax type. For what to do on each screen after that, see our guide to filing your income tax return, and check tax deadlines so you are not logging in at the last minute.
If you use our Chrome extension, note what it does and does not do: it fills your prepared return into the IRD e-services portal, and you review and submit it yourself. It does not log in for you, and it is not an IRD product.
Staff and tax agent logins
If you are logging in on behalf of someone else, use one of the other options on the same landing page.
- Authorisation of Staff/Tax Agent opens a form headed “I am logging in to authorise staff/tax agent”, asking for your company tax reference number and IRD PIN. IRD describes this service as being used “To authorise staff/Tax agent to act on your behalf for tax matters”.
- Company/Business’s Tax Matter asks for your own tax reference number and IRD PIN, plus the company tax reference number.
- Client’s Tax Matter asks for your own tax reference number and IRD PIN, plus the tax agent reference number.
- Stamp Duty – Non Compounding does not stay on eservices.ird.gov.lk. Selecting it sends you to a separate IRD address, www.eservices.ird.gov.lk on port 4433.
A safety note
Only ever enter your TIN and IRD PIN at eservices.ird.gov.lk. LankanTax is not affiliated with, endorsed by or operated by the Inland Revenue Department of Sri Lanka. We are an independent guide. Treat the official IRD site as the source of truth for your account and your filings.
